Specifying a Custom Bullet Image

When you need a bulleted list, the usual route is to click the Home tab’s Bullets button or pull down the Bullets list and click the type of bullet you want to use. However, to add a bit of visual interest to your lists, Word gives you a couple of methods for using special symbols and even custom images as bullets.

The first method uses AutoCorrect, which enables you to create bulleted lists on-the-fly. The easiest way to go about this is to first type any of the following characters:

*
o
— (em dash)

––
>
–>
=>

Then press Tab or the spacebar, enter the first bullet text, and press Enter. (If you use the lowercase o as the starting character, you must press Tab to create the bulleted list.) Word converts the paragraph into a bulleted list and starts a second bullet. Figure 2.8 shows the various bullet styles created by each character in the left column.

This trick also works with characters from a symbol typeface such as Symbol, Webdings, or Wingdings. Here’s how:
1. Choose Insert, Symbol, More Symbols to open the Symbol dialog box.
2. Use the Font list to choose the typeface you want to use.
3. Click the symbol you want to use as the bullet.
4. Click Insert.
5. Click Close.
6. Press Tab.
7. Type the first bullet text and press Enter. Word adds a second bullet using the symbol you chose.

This also works if you want to use a picture as the bullet. Choose Insert, Picture and use the Insert Picture dialog box to select the image you want to use. Note that the following folder contains a number of images suitable for bullets:
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Media\Office12\Bullets

Click Insert to add the picture to the document and then click beside the picture to deselect it. Press Tab or the spacebar, type the bullet text, and then press Enter to convert the text into a list with the picture as the bullet.

The second method uses the Define New Bullet dialog box. Choose Home, pull down the Bullets list, and choose Define New Bullet. Click the Symbol button to open the Symbol dialog box and choose a symbol to use as a bullet or click the Picture button to open the Picture Bullet dialog box and choose a picture to use as a bullet.
