I need to type hanging indents in Word 97, similar to what I used to do in WordPerfect. For example, I want an outdented subheading INTRODUCTION, then a paragraph immediately following it. Then I want another outdented subheading called BACKGROUND, and more text immediately following it. How can I set this up in Word?

  1. Firstly, press (Ctrl)(T) once to set up the hanging indents. This tells Word to indent the next paragraph by 1.27 cm except for the first line.

  2. Press (Ctrl)(T) again to indent the paragraph another 1.27 cm if your subheadings will be long words.

  3. Then, type your first subheading, in this case Introduction.

  4. Next, press the (Tab) once to indent the text that will follow the subheading.

  5. Type in your text, letting it wrap automatically at the end of each line. You will notice that the text wraps correctly, keeping Introduction outdented in the margin.

  6. Next, press the (Enter) key to start the next paragraph.

  7. Type your next subheading, in this example Background, then press the (Tab) key to indent the next part of the paragraph.

  8. Type in your text, again letting it wrap automatically at the end of each line.

  9. If you need to enter a second paragraph as part of the Background subheading, press (Enter) then press the (Tab) key immediately and begin typing your second Background paragraph.

In summary then, the steps are (1) Press (Ctrl)(T) then (2) type the first subheading, (3) press the (Tab) key then (4) type the rest of the paragraph; (5) Press (Enter) and type the next subheading, (6) press (Tab) and type the next paragraph.

To turn off the hanging indent function, press (Ctrl)(Q).
